This fondly remembered 27-minute short subject from 1959 was previously released on the shrimp edition 2-disc “Walt Disney Treasures: The Chronological Donald, Vol. 4″ in 2008. Although runt to only 35,000, right Donald fans might instead want to track down a broken-down or collectible copy of that two-disc area which included this short alongside 30 other cartoons from that era as well as ten 1999 Donald Duck shorts and other special features. The novel pre-order imprint seems particularly steep for a bare-bones disc with a 27-minute program, and if this disc is similar or identical to the version previously unusual to the Disney Movie Club, it will include nothing besides the main feature and previews for upcoming Disney films and DVDs.

One of the last four theatrical Donald Duck cartoons, Donald in Mathmagic Land didn’t pick up the Academy Award for 1959, which went to John Hubley’s Moonbird, but it was nominated for “Best Documentary Short”. In retrospect, it’s probably not only the best educational short of that year, but one of the best of any year. Hamilton Luske directed this lavish featurette, which despite clocking in at only 27 minutes, is filled with modernistic unhurried ’50s style art, dense and lavish color, and our common, imperfect duck.

Teachers loved to project this film for their classes, as it was so far above the host of now decently buried educational films of the time. This DVD opens with a montage trailer of scenes from the “Fantastic World of Disney” releases, which have the characteristic survey of the four color Technicolor of the ’60s, and that places this film in its rightful millieu. In his biography, ancient NBC head, Pat Weaver recalls that Disney offered NBC its film and TV catalog in the mid- ’50s if NBC would recall a fourth of the then fledgling Disneyland Park. David Sarnoff, president of RCA, which owned NBC, flatly refused. The Disneyland TV prove therefore continued on ABC, with a title change in the 1959 season to “Walt Disney Presents”. Due to the runaway success of Davey Crockett, however, ABC wanted Walt to sustain cranking out westerns, so in 1961, the program moved to NBC, with a original name many viewers remember, “The Extraordinary World of Color”.

“General” Sarnoff had made positive that RCA’s one goal was to sell color TV sets, since most homes calm had unlit and white, and “Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land” aired on its novel network as fragment of an hour explain hosted by a fresh character, Ludwig Von Drake, called “An Adventure in Color”. I very noteworthy wish that had been included on this DVD, as not only is the program though-provoking in its fill accurate, as well as a common of Von Drake fans, but it’s a bewitching snapshot of the early days of color TV, as the mallard professor talks about color, with continual asides like “you people with shaded and white sets will have to imagine what this looks like”. Then there’s the theme song, “The world is a carousel of color, color, color. Astounding, astonishing color.” The accompanying dreary motion nature shots made for an unforgettable, lively entrance to the reveal, which segued to the magic paintbrush, the renowned trademark of Disney educational films. Even in the days of shadowy and white sets, Disney had farsightedly chosen to film in color.

An early VHS release for video stores included the entire point to, but so far, the other allotment hasn’t made it to DVD. This shorter featurette, however, stands alone, and has far outlived most of the other titillating shorts from the exhibit. It’s also on The Chronological Donald Volume Four. Some reviewers have renowned that ten bucks might be a bit high for an under half hour reveal, and it would be nice to have some extras like interviews with animators or commentary on the short. However, anyone who’s ever seen this film will probably objective be contented to accept it on DVD. There’s also an “enhanced” teacher’s edition for about $50. That may seem steep, but you find a “printable teachers’ guide” and public performance license to present it in class, not unlike when educators of an earlier era would bustle to rent the film reel from distributors, and it probably ranked as the most checked out educational film.

The math in this film has been criticized, and some of it seems a bit of a stretch, but anyone alive to in the Golden Fragment or Divine Proportion, as it is variously termed, or patterns in nature, or basic principles of how a guitar works likely first got the bug watching this explain. Someone might even have hit the billiard hall armed with tricky shots from the film. Some of the chessboard and geometric shapes parts might seem more like an excuse to beget some animation, but they are serene bewitching, and this is not the only wildly speculative Disney film. If a few bits seem somewhat dated, that’s all share of the fun of a period film, and for animation lovers, this one is a esteem trove. So in many ways, this bare-bones, budget edition is the best of all worlds, and will likely entice modern viewers to join old-fashioned fans on the well-trod path with Donald in Mathmagic Land.

DISC 1: ALICE GUY

Alice Guy (later known as Guy-Blache) was an early woman director at a time before the movies were taken seriously as an industry and the men took over. These films were produced by Guy for Gaumont before she moved to the US, tell her to be an unqualified pioneer whose work stands alongside that of the Lumiere Brothers, Georges Melies, and Edwin S. Porter, in cinema’s swiftly growth from an optical illusion to a storytelling medium to an art compose. Among the highlights are a 19th-century serpentine dance, early (trick) films, experiments with hand-coloring and synchronized sound, comedies, social commentaries, and a 33-minute religious epic: The Birth, the Life and the Death of Christ (1906) .

DISC 2: LOUIS FEUILLADE

Probably best remembered for the serial Les Vampires, Louis Feuillade had a more varied and profound influence upon French cinema than many of his followers realize. For more than a decade, he was the artistic director at Gaumont, encouraging the rise of such filmmakers as Abel Gance and Leonce Perret. This collection of films offers a wider understanding of Feuillade’s directorial efforts, though it is only a puny part of the nearly 800 films he is believed to have directed. These films race the gamut of ribald comedy (The Colonel’s Legend), charming fantasy (Spring), tragedy (The Heart and Money), social commentary (The Defect) and historical myth (the remarkably poignant The Agony of Byzance) . The Trust: Or the Battles for Money and The Obsession are characterized by the brisk pacing and diabolical tone for which he would become notorious and plunge in line with the thrillers he is better known for.

The Colonel’s Chronicle (1907, 4 min.)

A Very Lovely Lady (1908, 3 min.)

Spring (1909, 7 min.)

The Fairy of the Surf (1909, 7 min.)

Custody of the Child (1909, 11 min.)

The Defect (1911, 41 min.)

The Roman Orgy (1911, 8 min.)

The Trust (1911, 24 min.)

The Heart and the Money (1912, 17 min.)

The Obsession (1912, 23 min.)

Tragic Error (1913, 24 min.)

Bout de Zan Steals an Elephant (1913, 9 min.)

The Agony of Byzance (1913, 29 min.)

BONUS FEATURE:

Louis Feuillade: Master of Many Forms – This collection of scenes from more than twenty films demonstrates Feuillade’s mastery of (and influence upon) a wide range of cinematic genres.

Curated by Pierre Philippe – Total running time: 217 Minutes – Full-Frame (1.33:1) – Music by Patrick Laviosa

DISC 3: LEONCE PERRET

Until now, the films of Leonce Perret have been virtually unseen in the United States, yet he was a hugely influential figure in the growth of the French film industry. As an actor, he appeared in more than 100 films from 1909 to 1916, including the long-running series of (Leonce) comedies. But his greater contribution was as a director. Working at Gaumont under the supervision of Louis Feuillade, Perret dwelling the standard to which other French filmmakers aspired. His films had a technical mastery and exquisite grace that allowed them to advise subtleties of character and meaning. Perret’s artistic maturity is beautifully represented in the influential feature The Child of Paris, a naturalistic drama reminiscent of Emile Zola. Of this film, critic Georges Sadoul proclaimed, Leonce Perret was able to render a beautiful and spellbinding memoir by using an extraordinarily refined cinematic repertoire: backlighting, low-angle shots, close-ups, spirited shots and numerous other innovations, all of which Perret implemented with flair, in stark incompatibility to…the unexcited somewhat ragged technique of David W. Griffith at that time. Perret made a number of self-referential films, in which the medium of cinema is a component of the plotline. In The Mystery of the Rocks of Kador, an amnesiac woman undergoes a sort of cinematic hypnosis as a means of recalling the details of a tragic crime.

The Mystery of the Rocks of Kador (Le Mystere des roches de Kador) (1912)

Color Tinted – 43 Minutes – Directed by Leonce Perret

The Child of Paris (L’Enfant de Paris) (1913)

Color Tinted – 124 Minutes – Written and directed by Leonce Perret

BONUS FEATURE:

Leonce Perret: The Filmmaker’s Filmmaker – Illustrated with rare film clips, this mini-documentary reveals the artistry and wit of French cinema’s unsung hero.

End of press release.

Gaumont is the oldest film company in the world, having been founded in 1895, and the only one of their early products that I am entirely familiar with is Judex. I have seen several of Alice Guy’s work via the Treasures of the American Film Archives sets. Of Louis Feuillade’s work I have seen Les Vampires. I am looking forward to seeing the work at Gaumont in the very early days. Like the Edison status, do realize that most films made before 1910 in both America and Europe were of an experimental nature and do not really snarl a fable.

I have been waiting for this place to approach for a long, long time. Now that it is here, I can say without a doubt that it was well worth the wait and more. Although Edison, the Lumieres and others had been working on the development of movies before Gaumont was founded in 1896, no studio did more to befriend set aside them. This 3 DVD spot focuses on three of their production heads (one per disc) between 1897-1913. One of them, Louis Feuillade, is well known to today’s audiences thanks to the success of his mute serials FANTOMAS, LES VAMPIRES and JUDEX. The other two, Alice Guy and Leonce Perret, are hardly known at all especially Perret.

This spot is invaluable in many ways. For me the principal reason is that it contains over 3 hours of material by Alice Guy (later Guy-Blache’) . Guy was the first woman pioneer of cinema and the short films calm here reveal her to not only have notify of the modern medium, but a willingness to experiment as well. There are comedies, trick films, dramas, even attempts to introduce color and synchronized sound. For too long she has been relegated to footnote area due to the unavailability of her output but this space changes all that. One invaluable film shows her shooting a synchronized sound short allowing us a view into turn-of-the-last century moviemaking.

The other accurate discovery here are the two films of Leonce Perret. He began as an actor and then took over production from Feuillade shortly before World War One while unexcited managing to appear in many of Gaumont’s films including his have. THE MYSTERY OF THE ROCKS OF KODOR shows him using the modern technology of movies to solve a crime. The fat length feature THE CHILD OF PARIS from 1913 is as sterling if not better than any film I’ve seen from that time period. I’m astonished that in all my years of watching and reading about peaceful films, I don’t occupy ever having heard of Perret. I’m tickled to have that oversight corrected.

Although this situation will be of essential interest to people involved in the history of film, others shouldn’t have too abominable a time of it as most of the material is laughable and the music performed with it is highly appropriate. The visual quality of almost everything on show here is truly fantastic. The material was gathered from several different archives and the restoration work makes it stare as if it had objective been developed. We’re talking films that are almost 100 years used and more so that is really saying something. First class in every regard, GAUMONT TREASURES belongs on the film historian’s shelf upright next to Kino’s EDISON space. Between the two you can have an ideal history of the birth of cinema as we know it.

One of the landmark films of the 1960s, Bonnie and Clyde changed the course of American cinema. Setting a milestone for screen violence that paved the way for Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch, this exercise in mythologized biography should not be labeled as a bloodbath; as critic Pauline Kael wrote in her rave review, “it’s the absence of sadism that throws the audience off balance.” The film is more of a poetic ode to the Great Depression, starring the dream team of Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the titular antiheroes, who barrel across the South and Midwest robbing banks with Clyde’s brother Buck (Gene Hackman), Buck’s frantic wife Blanche (Estelle Parsons), and their faithful accomplice C.W. Moss (the inimitable Michael J. Pollard). Bonnie and Clyde is an unforgettable classic that has lost none of its power since the 1967 release. –Jeff Shannon
